Over the past two+ decades, we have helped some of our clients grow from basic website beginnings to modern small enterprises. Here are three case studies in how we have served some notable clients over many years.
The Cass Gilbert Society (CGS) - A Story of a Non-profit Leveraging their Website for Capacity Building
The Cass Gilbert Society is a group of historical architects dedicated to performing research about American architect Cass Gilbert and cataloging his works. Cass Gilbert began his career in Minnesota and designed the state capitol as well as dozens of St. Paul residences and commercial buildings. Later he moved to New York and designed the Woolworth building (the first American skyscraper) and the US Supreme Court building as well as 3 other state capitols among many projects.Read More
A fledgling non-profit based in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Cass Gilbert Society came to us in 2003 with a small and partially functional website built by an college art student. CGS asked us to host and update it. We agreed and suggested that they augment the website to build their membership base and thus the capacity of their non-profit to do more projects. By 2007 CGS was able to fund a complete website redesign (including analysis, prototype & and build) by Factor of 4 that included a small database of the top 40 architectural works by Gilbert. By 2011, because of the website's educatonal outreach, CGS surpassed the New York Historical Society as the nationally recognized authority on Cass Gilbert. This led to a further Factor of 4 project to expand the database to another 40 works in a more elaborate catalog of works, complete with annotated references and photos.
In 2017, Factor of 4 aided CGS in receiving a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to coordinate a search for missing original Gilbert-designed furnishings (chairs, tables, etc.) from the Minnesota State Capitol concurrent with the State of Minnesota project to rehabilitate the capitol building. Factor of 4 built an special-purpose, interactive website addition to elicit and track these missing furnishings. Today CGS continues to maintain their national reputation for original Cass Gilbert research and historical authority.
Lions Gym - Stephen Evans Menya (SEM) - Growing with the Company: A 4-Stage Story of Website Development
Stephen Evans Menya's passion is physical health and muscle fitness and his dream was to become a medical doctor. In the mid 2000's, he began his business by acquiring some used weight machines to train clients in his garage. Before long he and his wife found a studio in a Minneapolis suburb to create his first version of Lions Gym. Factor of 4 created a small, brochureware website in 2007 that described services such as: Tailored Personal Training, Cardio-Vascular Training, Weight Training, Range of Motion Training, Massage & Recuperating, as well as his personal philosophy. His in-house licensed chiropractor, Dr. Richard Greene became a mentor.Read More
The first website helped Menya build a solid clientele, and necessitated finding a larger space. In 2012, he and his wife moved the business to another suburb and called upon us to give the website a new, refreshed look to match the new gym. During the next several years, the gym began to offer group exercise classes as well as other services because Stephen finished his medical training to become a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. By 2014 the business was renamed Lions Gym & Wellness Center and necessitated a further website upgrade. Factor of 4 continued to update the website until 2019, when Stephen was approached by a workout client who wanted to contribute his web design skill to simplify website modification and address young audiences.
We recently helped our client www.lionsgym.com, take control of their Facebook presence by adding custom META tags to their site. That enables Lions Gym to pick the thumbnail and description FB displays whenever their site is mentioned.

Paul Market Productions (PMP) - An SEO Story in Search-Engine Visibility
Professional Minneapolis photographer Paul Markert has an impressive set of corporate clients. He came to Factor of 4 in 2006 upon recommendation of a good friend whom Factor of 4 had already helped with vastly improved search engine optimization (SEO). Like CGS (above), Paul had a small, brochureware website that was based in deprecated flash technology and was devoid of search-engine indexing code--it needed a complete redesign.Read More
In 2009 we launched a fully-functional website for Paul complete with portfolios, a description of his methods, and showcasing his services not only as a portrait and lifestyle photographer, but also as an artist who keeps abreast of the latest digital photo technology. In 2011, we began monthly website statistics tracking and reporting to Paul in how his website ranked against a growing number of local competitors. By 2013 we provided a marketing communication analysis and created an updated visual design to reflect the range of his visual work as well as showcase his in-studio and on-location versatility.
In 2015 we transformed the website to be responsive to handheld devices (phones and tablets) We also:
- added social media integration
- enabled CMS (content management system) database-driven Portfolios
- added portfolios for Advertising and Social Media
- constructed online forms for clients to submit project descriptions and request estimates.
During the pandemic shutdown in 2020, Paul authorized a full-visual, interactivity and content redesign of the website. Today Paul Markert Productions has a website that continues to attract new business while presenting his brand as fresh, attractive and successful.
